The need for modern medicine to extend quality life of a worldwide aging population requires new technologies and models for testing new therapies or devices. Besides performing high quality research the CMCiB develops innovative tools and provides expertise to help researchers and industry users transfer their innovations to the patient or the market.

Rutipaste: First GLP-compliant multicentre study led by IGTP researchers at CMCiB
The first multicentric GLP study led by a research team from the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) has been conducted at CMCiB facilities to validate the efficacy and safety of Rutipaste, an innovative product designed to treat anastomotic leakage (AL) following colorectal surgery.
Developed by Dr Joan Francesc Julián, Dr Manel Cremades and Dr Clara Gené, surgeons and researchers from the General and Digestive Surgery Service of the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital (HUGTiP) and IGTP, Rutipaste addresses the need for innovative techniques that enhance anastomotic closure and minimize the associated clinical complications such as abscess, peritonitis, sepsis, or even mortality. The surgeons had to undergo specific training to perform the study under the GLP quality system. "Conducting the study under GLP conditions ensures it is reproducible and auditable, and it facilitates our progress toward clinical stages", explains Dr Clara Gené, who led the study. Currently, the GLP study has yielded promising results and is ready to move to the next phase, showcasing Rutipaste's potential for clinical translation.
This project reinforces CMCiB's role as a reference centre in the validation of medical devices under Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), in full compliance with high-quality standards and in strict conformity with applicable public health authority guidelines.
