Students from Badalona discover research at the Can Ruti Campus during Science Week
Around two hundred baccalaureate and vocational training students from the Badalonès, La Riera, Eugeni d'Ors, Joan Maragall and Pere Vergés schools took part today in a new edition of the activity "Open House: get to know the Can Ruti Campus up close", organised by the Badalona Educational Service (CRP) and the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP), with the collaboration of all the institutions on the campus.
The day began in the Auditorium of the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital with the lecture "We do research at Can Ruti" by Dr Júlia García Prado, scientific director of IGTP, who highlighted the importance of biomedical research and cooperation among the campus centres. Afterwards, participants tested their knowledge with a health research quiz and learned first-hand about the work of young researchers developing their careers at Can Ruti.
Those taking part included David Panisello, Ona Torrejón and Maria Piñana (Pathogen Diagnostics and Genomic Epidemiology, DxEpiPath), Alexia Garcia (Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology, CMN), Helena Rodríguez and Paula de Pedro (Endocrine Tumours), Guillem Safont (Innovation in Respiratory Infections and Tuberculosis) and Jorge Mena (Genomics and Transcriptomics of Synucleinopathies, GTS).
Next, the students split into small groups for guided tours of various centres on the Can Ruti Campus, such as CEEISCAT, the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital, the Institut Català d'Oncologia (ICO) and the CARE Program, the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC), the Institut Guttmann, IrsiCaixa, the Fundació Lluita contra les Infeccions, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and IGTP.

Groups visiting IGTP explored different research areas and unique facilities. At the Comparative Medicine and Bioimage Centre of Catalonia (CMCiB), Rosa Ampudia and Sara Capdevila led the workshop Research at CMCiB. In the bioinformatics workshop, Míriam Margallón and Bernat Gel (Translational Genomics and Bioinformatics of Cancer) demonstrated how genomic data is used to study cancer. At CEEISCAT, Sara Castillo, Hernan Perea and Andreu Colom offered the workshop Get tested, it's no big deal! on research into sexually transmitted infections.
Other groups visited research laboratories, such as the Biobank (with Edurne Pedrosa), GCAT (with Natalia Blay and Xavier Farré), B·ARGO (with Adrià Bernat), Cancer Genetics and Epigenetics (CGE) (with Beatriz González) and various IGTP groups focused on cancer, neurodegenerative and infectious diseases.

Through the Open House, the Can Ruti Campus once again strengthens its commitment to scientific outreach and fostering vocations among young people, showcasing the diversity of research lines developed on campus and their contribution to progress in health and biomedicine.
This year, the Setmana de la Ciència (Science Week) celebrates its 30th edition, promoted by the Government of Catalonia and the Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca i la Innovació (FCRI). For IGTP, taking part is an opportunity to bring biomedical research closer to the public and to reaffirm the institute's commitment to scientific culture and the training of new talent, sharing the work carried out at the Can Ruti Campus with the educational community of Badalona.
